lol..well rather the semester is~ :D
My semester has definitely been different, good and bad. The good part is that I’m sleeping more than last year, and have simply been just waking up in the morning to complete assignments. The bad news is my grades aren’t quite as I wanted them to be, but in my defense, they were hard classes!

Biology is the study of life. Sure, thats the simple definition, but it’s REALLY complicated. Like making glucose (i think…or breaking it down…can’t remember but..) first you have to take the sugar the break it down and in the meantime you have to use P-groups that come from ATP that come from the electon cycle that is powered by electrons that come from water that. you know it just goes on. I personally am completely fascinated by biology, and thats a good thing i suppose, since i want to become a dermatologist. :D

Spanish this year, has been really difficult. In..35 min.s i’m going to be quizzed on 200 vocab words! (“thats a quiz?!” i know!) I always thought that I understood spanish, but when i try to listen to spanish speakers speak, I realize that I still have a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG way to go! But I will try my best!

Pre-calcus. Math is a logic thing, but..somehow it manages to become the most confusing class of all! This might be because I’m trying to memorize the unit circle, and then applying it with sin, cos, tan, csc, sec, cot! Luckily I’ve finally understood how to calculate the circle unit (a bit..(minor details xP))!

Biology is my favorite class because it interests me. I feel as if the mysteries of the world become clearer after the class. For example.. one time I was looking at a tree, and I realized that that tree was absolutely amazing because inside it all these cycles were occurring! Sure, it’s a tad..strange to be looking at a tree and think “wow…that tree is so cool…=O” but thats what happened after bio class. ^.^

j-Ok bye Alex x3

I personally had a lot of fun making this clip, and was really glad that I had a very willing-to-try-something-new partner, Alex =D yay *clapping sounds in the background. (=O oh no, she can’t upload the mp3 clip.) In the beginning we were speaking in Japanese, then we spoke Spanish, and after that we spoke in Mandarin Chinese! We were debating whether to say that we flew to the moon and skated on rings, but I didn’t know how to say that in Japanese or Mandarin so… but luckily Alex was part of the two person team and she had some superb Spanish speaking skills! :D

Creationism vs. Evolution

Today, October 22, 2009, to me, it feels like our world knows a lot of things about…well, a lot of things . Say for example the digital camera, how does a click of a button allow the camera to take a picture or how does a sound recording machine record music onto tapes or disk.  We already have  weapons that could blow up the entire Earth several times over! We even have a water re-newing source that can re-new water every time someone flushes the toilet! Seems pretty impossible to me, yet I live in a time when we really can do all of these things. Sounds crazy, right?

However, we still have a lot of questions that have been left unanswered for a long time. For instance, what happens after a person dies? When does life begin? How did all of  life begin? If there is a beginning, where did that beginning come from? Are there really aliens or ghosts? Is there someone up there watching over us? A lot of questions that we have yet to answer, huh?

Religion, what is it? Religion is “a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.” A question people debate about is whether there truly is a supernatural being that began all of life. If there is a supernatural being, how did it begin all of life? are our lives already determined? what happens after life ends? do we have a place to go? If there isn’t a supernatural being, then how did life really begin? can it be re-created? what does happen a person dies? is there no real right or wrong?

In this particular article, “The Angry Evolutionist,” Richard Dawkins truly believes that there is evolution. Creationists are those that believe that a supernatural being, usually God, had created each and every single animal, and evolved them as he or she or they pleased. Evolutionists believe that the animals that are best fit to survive slowly change to become better adapted to their environments. A catagory in between, some people believe in both creationsim and evolution. These people believe that a supernatural being had createed life, but then “stepped back” and let life evolve on its own. (This reminds me of non-objective art, where the artist creates the art piece but does not decide what the art piece will look like.)

I personally am in the in between category. First, I will address the supernatural being part.I believe in that there is a supernatural being because I just simply can’t imagine something beginning from nothing at all. Perhaps this is because of the thinking I’ve been taught. For example, homework just doesn’t dissappear, someone has to have taken it, or the person lost it (or…the dog could have eaten it, or someone accidentally flushed it down the toilet..)(and yes, I have heard those excuses being used before (lol)). I just can’t see that 0+0=1. A different way of saying this could be for every effect there has to be a cause. If there was nothing at all in the beginning, where did the universe come from? There just had to be something before, if there is something now. But all of these atoms and elements have to have come from somewhere. I suppose it’s almost like the rule: mass is neither created nor destroyed.

Crocoduck-thumb

As for the part about evolution, it makes perfect sense to me. I think that the best fit do survive. For example, in my dad’s time( he went to school in Hong Kong), all of the students were required to take tests, a bit like the SAT. These test scores would determine whether the student would be able to continue his or her education beacuse there weren’t enough schools. In sixth grade they would all take a test, and some students are eliminated. In eleventh grade the students would take another test, and many more are eliminated. By the end of a student’s education, only the top 15% or so of all the classes from elementary school remain. That system was a very intense competition, and so is life. There aren’t enough resources for every single species, and only the best of the best survive. It’s cruel, but this way it ensures that only those that can cope with what their environments survive. Thus, all life will have to keep on improving to compete for survival.
